Happy Deaf Awareness Week!
A few months ago I was inspired to create a series of music videos showcasing some of my Deaf friends interpreting songs into American Sign Language. Today I’m so very excited to share that this is becoming a reality and here is my first pilot video in the project!
This was beyond fun putting together and I had the chance to work with the talented and award-winning videographer Colin Shepherd. You can check him out at www.cfsfilms.com.
That beautiful woman signing in the video is my dear friend Lisa Herbert who not only agreed to do this without much notice or practice, but flew out to visit and make the video. She did an amazing job! Love you Lisa!
Lastly, the recording you hear in the video was the first official recording I made right in my own living room. “Here Right Now” is one of my newer original songs and it was incredibly fun to learn how to capture the tune and learn about the editing/mixing process. I can’t wait to record more!
I have to thank my long time music collaborator and bud Eric Oberschmidt who helped me so much with the production of the song including the guitar hook and licks you hear, as well as back up vocals. Those little touches make all the difference in recording. So grateful we got to work together.
So happy to share this with you all!
Hope to connect with you soon,
Rhea 🙂
P.S. In the spirit of Deaf Awareness week, here’s a fun fact some you may not be aware of:
American Sign Language (ASL) is considered a “foreign” language with its own vocabulary, grammar and syntax. Just like spoken language there are even regional dialects! It’s not just a signed form of English.
Signed languages are NOT universal, actually there are more than 200 signed languages in use around the globe! Anywhere deaf people exist, non-verbal indigenous languages develop and evolve. Language, culture and the brain are so incredible.
